For more than 45 years, Leadership Memphis has been the premiere Mid-South organization for preparing civic-minded leaders to work together and improve their communities. Leadership Memphis boasts more than 4,200 alums who are executives in Fortune 500 companies, pastors of some of the oldest congregations in the Mid-South, innovators in the nonprofit world, patrons of the arts, and countless small business leaders who are the lifeblood of Memphis.

Today, Leadership Memphis is searching for a president and chief executive officer with the demonstrated ability to lead a team while engaging the community and its leaders in order to make positive impacts on the Memphis community as well as the lives and professional careers of Memphis business leaders.

The President/CEO of Leadership Memphis and Volunteer Memphis is responsible for leading the organization in a way that supports and guides the organization’s vision and mission, as well as the short-term and long-term planning and day-to-day operations. The President/CEO will possess a high level of broad business and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support for the organization. The President/CEO reports to the board of Leadership Memphis, and supports and interacts with board committees, steering councils, ad hoc work groups and other collaborative partners with the intent of growing and protecting Leadership Memphis’ reputation and brand.

Description:

The President/CEO of Leadership Memphis and Volunteer Memphis is responsible for representing the organization’s brand in all settings and matters and leading the organization in a way that supports and guides the organization’s vision and mission, as well as the short-term and long-term planning and day-to-day operations.  This includes ensuring the organization stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as growing the base of effective community leaders willing, ready, and able to take Memphis to the next level. The President/CEO possesses a high level of broad business and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support for the organization. This role is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good – creating, resourcing, scaling and leveraging strategies for the organization as well as being the steward of the brand and understands their role in growing and protecting the reputation of Leadership Memphis. The President/CEO reports to the board of Leadership Memphis, and supports and interacts with board committees, steering councils, partners, and ad hoc work groups.

Responsibilities include the following:

Strategic Development

  • Serves as the principal resource to the Board of Directors and its key committees to give strong direction to strategy and implementation
  • Partners with the Board of Directors and Senior Leadership team to craft organizational goals and develops strategies to ensure they are achieved
  • Ensures coordination and alignment of all programs, initiatives, and alumni experiences to strategic direction in the areas of community impact, resource development, and staff alignment.

Fundraising

  • Oversees and executes with the Director of Development and Donor Engagement, Board of Directors, and other Senior Leadership all fundraising efforts to include corporate sponsorships, alumni giving, grants, program admissions (in partnership with the Director of Programs and Operations), and any potential areas of growth.
  • Manage, elevate, retain, and seek out relationships with community sponsors, partners, foundations, governments, and stakeholders
  • Meet all revenue goals for the organization

Grant Strategy/Oversight

  • Develop, in partnership with the BoD and Senior Leadership, the ongoing strategy for grants which align with the mission, vision and capabilities of the organization.
  • Assure that required resources (human, technology, systems, marketing and communications, etc) are identified and the allocation methodology is framed and agreed upon to guarantee success
  • Oversee execution, reporting, resource assessments, financial impacts, etc

 Marketing and Communications

  • Lead and support the marketing and communications annual plan
  • Oversee proper usage of the Leadership Memphis and Volunteer Memphis brand and narrative
  • Direct development of collateral materials, newsletters, social media, website, and public relations

Operations and Finance:

  • Works with the Directors to assure smooth day-to-day operations.
  • Works with the Director of Finance and Administration to insure fiscally sound budgeting, appropriate financial processes, timely reporting, and responsible financial management.
  • Ensure Leadership Memphis and Volunteer Memphis has effective and up to date databases for effective communication and goal setting

Programs and Events

  • Works with the Director of Programs, Director of Development & Donor Engagement (TBD), and Director of Volunteer Memphis & Community Outreach to execute quality programs, events and initiatives
  • Seeks out new program partnerships and keep all programs topical and effective to keep the Leadership Memphis program participants and alumni, informed, engaged, and committed to the LM Mission and Vision
  • Works with Senior Leadership and related Board Committees to create elevated volunteering, alumni engagement, and special event experiences

Staff Leadership and Talent Development

  • Assures that the staff has the capabilities, competencies and tools, including appropriately deployed technology, to deliver on the organizational goals, strategies and plans.
  • Provide clear and timely communication to team to assure understanding of and focus on short and long term organizational targets
  • Encourages teamwork, creativity, innovation, efficiency, professional growth, and development in both staff and volunteers

Qualifications, Education, Experience

Qualifications/Skills/Competencies Required

  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills with solid financial management experience
  • Must be a strong fundraiser to generate resources for the organization
  • Promote team-mindedness with staff
  • Ability to multitask, take initiative, work independently
  • Demonstrated creative and innovative problem-solving skills with a track record of leadership in this area
  • Enthusiastic, flexible, organized, collaborative, communicator
  • Experience in working with a board of directors
  • Grant experience – sourcing, writing, integration into regular business processes, reporting, execution planning, managing the team for results
  • Flexibility to meet after or before regular work hours

Education/Experience

    • Bachelors Degree required; Masters Degree preferred
    • 5 or more years of leadership, management or supervisory experience with financial management/budgetary responsibility required
    • 7 or more years of nonprofit management experience in an operational environment preferred
    • Current resident of greater Memphis area/Shelby County preferred
    • Alumni of Leadership Memphis Executive Program or Fast Track or similar community leadership development program preferred
    • Prior experience on a nonprofit board would be beneficial
