Executive Class 2019

Executive Class 2019

The Executive Program brings together 80 “seasoned professionals” – leaders in their companies, or fields – who are interested in deepening their understanding of Memphis and their place as a change agent in the city.  We divide these 80 class members among eight communities in the city, to immerse them in a particular place to make the gains in IQ, EQ, and network come to life.  Each group will not only learn more about the specific community (though service-learning at a high school in each neighborhood), but Executives will learn about their community at large when the whole class comes together.

The program will, overall, drill through the many layers of Memphis’ very special “ecosystem”.  We know how much value there is in getting to know a neighborhood, and the micro-communities therein, and continuing to drill down to a more distinct level by spending time in a local high school – and then even further by getting to know the students in that school.  By understanding, and immersing in, the multiple layers which make up our city, Executives will be able to deepen their impact as community leaders, through the simple acts of opening up, listening, being present and reaching out to understand.

Through a series of monthly Class Days, Learning Journeys/Doing Journeys, and participation in our SUCCESS High Schools program, we will achieve three program goals. The program goals are to:

·        Advance diversity and inclusivity;

·        Increase individual and collective impact; and

·        Promote civic engagement that makes a /difference.

Each program day will focus on one of three Core Competencies of community leadership.  There are specific learning objectives for each day, a set of guiding questions (to spark discussion), and a list of related “hot button” issues which will come into the conversation.  The Core Competencies are:

·        Framing / Re-framing Ideas – a group or community recognizing and defining its opportunities and issues in a way that results in effective action.

·        Mobilizing Resources – developing and maintaining relationships that allow individuals to work together and share resources, despite their differences.

·        Building & Using Social Capital – engaging a critical mass of people, resources, and interests in taking action to achieve a specific outcome or set of outcomes.
